From desert to swamp: Towards a queer literary theory

This article seeks to pose a series of questions and inquiries regarding queer approaches to literature. To this end, it revisits some of the debates that emerged within feminist literary theory during the 1970s and 1980s, in order to trace the continuity (rather than an abrupt rupture) between these discussions, subsequent queer theory, and more traditional literary theory. Finally, through a brief examination of certain theoretical and literary works by Saxe, it proposes the notion of the swamp as a way of approaching literature that does not privilege content (and the representation of identities) over form (and its disruptive potentialities).
