Neoliberal attachments: a contribution to affect studies

For some time now, the social sciences have been concerned with the capacity of social systems to produce lasting bonds between their mandates and subjects. Simultaneously, a series of studies have revealed the complexities and transformations of contemporary neoliberalism, leading to a certain consensus regarding the coexistence of multiple neoliberal formations. Following both trends, this work seeks to evaluate the capacity of the category of affect for investigating attachments to and within neoliberalism. Thus, after reviewing the contributions and limitations of the governmental approach, we analyze some studies that understand affect as pre-discursive bodily capacities, which are supposedly captured by neoliberalism for its reproduction. Our central argument is that, by presupposing the operation of affect, these studies add little to the explanation of how attachments to neoliberalism are produced. In response, the main contributions that the post-foundational approach can make to the study of neoliberal attachments are presented, where these are assumed as a discursive process situated at the center of all practices of meaning-making.
