Tokaj-Hegyalja is a historic wine-growing region located in northeastern Hungary, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplen County. Since 2002, the Tokaj Cultural Landscape has been one of the wine-growing landscapes inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along with the Port wine Appellation of Origin (Alto Douro, Portugal), Tokaj shares the honor of being the oldest wine Appellation of Origin in the world. The role of history and its close relationship with cultural heritage have been one of the main pillars in the construction of both the region itself and the international image of Tokaj wine. In this article, we will attempt to analyze certain aspects linked to culture and heritage in the construction of this wine-producing Appellation of Origin and the international image of its wine. Through these thematic axes, we will be able to observe how the discourse built around winemaking in this Hungarian region connects with history, legend, local culture, and, ultimately, heritage in the construction of one of Europe’s most famous and important wines.
