Abstract

The agave is an emblematic plant in Mexico with profound cultural, ecological, and economic value. There are approximately 210 agave species worldwide, 159 of which are found in Mexico. Its importance transcends its ancestral use to its role in modern industry. The states of Oaxaca and Jalisco are key to its use, particularly in the production of mezcal and tequila, respectively, while the central part of the country maintains the tradition of pulque. Beyond its economic importance, the agave is crucial for the conservation of biodiversity, supporting ecological interactions with organisms such as nectar-eating bats, birds, and insects, including maguey worms. However, this resource is threatened by overexploitation and climate change. To ensure its conservation, it is urgently necessary to implement sustainable management strategies that balance its economic use and the preservation of its biodiversity.
